Tyler Joe Den Besten was born to Harlan “Butch” Den Besten and Janice (Postma) Den Besten on March 16, 1989. From a young age, he was full of life and spirit and marched to the beat of his own drum. His youth leader described him as “a little naughty, but always respectful”—a reflection of his vibrant personality and kind heart.
Tyler had a natural talent for most anything he tried and was often recognized by classmates as being a “natural-born winner.” His Uncle Dwayne, who also served as his football coach, played a pivotal role in Tyler's life. Dwayne’s pride in Tyler was evident to everyone around them. More than a coach, Dwayne was a strong father figure who loved Tyler like a son and continues to hold that love close.
Tyler was never afraid of hard work and found joy in gardening—two qualities he inherited from his father. Tyler had a profound love for cats (Reese, Cookie, Julian, and Honey) from the spunky, crazy cat t-shirts he wore to the strays he brought home from the side of the road, he was deeply genuine and possessed one of the biggest hearts. Whether you were a close friend or a stranger, Tyler welcomed conversation without judgment.
Tyler’s journey reminds us of the importance of compassion, understanding, and support for those facing addiction and mental health challenges. After an attempt to take his life, a whirlwind of emotion and uncertainty swept through those who loved him. Then emerged a glimmer of hope - the possibility of organ donation.
Tyler was able to give others the most precious gift, the gift of life. This final act of generosity is a reflection of the person he truly was loving and full of heart.
Tyler will be remembered for the laughter he shared and for the light he brought into the lives of others.
His story is a powerful reminder to hold each other close, speak openly about mental health, and to never underestimate the power of kindness.
Tyler is survived by three children; his mother, Janice; siblings Lynelle Beth Schemmel, Mark (Angie) Den Besten, Jeanie (Danny) Maae, and Chantel (Derek) Van Veldhuizen; nieces and nephews: Amanda and Ashley Schemmel; Dustin Maae, Bret (MaTrasa) Maae, Michaela Den Besten, Alexis and Keilani Maae; Jonathan Zoet, Alex (Jacob) Van Der Wilt, Hunter and Taiten Den Besten; Mason and Kynlee Van Veldhuizen; six great nephews, one great niece, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends. Tyler was preceded in death by his father, Butch Den Besten; grandparents, John and Willemina Den Besten; Gib and Marie Postma; and his niece, Amber Schemmel. Tyler’s legacy will live on in the hearts he touched and the lives he helped save.
