Theodore “Ted” Underberg Jr., age 72, of Larchwood, IA, died suddenly on Friday, September 4, 2026.

Visitation will be on Friday, September 11th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, with family present at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood, IA, with a Vigil Service at 7:00 PM.

Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at The Church of St. Mary, with Father Sunny Dominic as celebrant.

Arrangements are in the care of the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids, IA.

Memorial may be directed to: LEMS (Larchwood Emergency Medical Services) or Larchwood Fire Department.

Ted was born to Theodore “Ted” Sr. and Felicitas (Perkinson) Underberg on October 15th, 1953, in Valley Springs, South Dakota. He graduated from West Lyon High School in 1972.

He was united in marriage to Cheryl Van Anne on July 27th, 1974. They settled in Larchwood, where they raised their three boys, Chris, Ben, and Jon.

After graduating from high school, Ted worked in construction with Palmer Construction, Grotewold Construction, and with his brother Fritz in Underberg Construction. He then worked as head custodian at West Lyon School for over 10 years starting in 1988. Ted then worked at Hillyard Inc. in Sioux Falls before retiring due to health issues and then finally starting his beloved bus driving job back at West Lyon School. He served his community as a member of the Optimist Club, Knights of Columbus, Larchwood Fire Department, and Larchwood City Council.

Ted is survived by his wife, Cheryl (Van Anne); children, Christopher (Jessica Moeller), Benjamin (Bobbie Kelly), and Jonathon (Chelsea Dinges). Ted was the proud grandfather of Sam, Mason, Callie, Myles, and Abby. Ted is also survived by brothers Jim Underberg, Fritz (Patty) Underberg, Willie Underberg, Tom (Sue) Underberg; and sisters Barb (Robert) Sehr, Patricia (John) Schmidt, Sharon (the late Dale) Hinrichs, Shirley (Cliff) Breen, Diane (Ron) Brower, Coni (Steph) Saunders, Mary Underberg Larson; and brother-in-law Tom (Laurie) Van Anne, sister-in-law Sue (Allen) Blauwet. Ted was also an uncle to many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted Sr. and Felicitas Underberg; brother-in-law, Dale Hinrichs; nephew, Greg Sehr; and niece-in-law, Susan Reilly.
