Steven Thomas Weier was born March 4, 1948, in Yankton, SD to Clement J. and Delores (Healy) Weier. He was the third of seven children. Steve earned his education for the first 8 years in a one-room schoolhouse, Freeman High School and Southern State College in Springfield, South Dakota where he excelled in football at all levels. He also earned a Masters' degree at Drake University in 1991. Upon graduation from SSC, Steve taught and coached in Centerville, SD (1970-1976) and George, IA (1976-2007). After his retirement from the classroom, he enjoyed helping farmers, golfing, camping, and substitute teaching for another 17 years when he finally got out of school at 77 years old. Congrats, Pops. Steve and Bernette (Bernie Goertz) were united in marriage on April 11, 1968, and blessed with two children — Michael (Joy) and Marsha (Jaros). Six grandchildren and two great grandchildren completed the family. Steve so enjoyed attending their many activities and was always so pleased to see their growth and maturity develop through the years. He always looked forward to "Grandpa/Grandma Camp" where activities and campfires were planned with the grandkids. Grandpa's traditional Christmas Trivia will always be remembered by the fun, laughter, and financial benefits. These times gave him some wonderful and cherished memories. Throughout the years, Steve had the pleasure to educate and work with some of the best people you could ever ask to be around. The greatest pleasure Steve had was later in life when he came into contact with his old students who became successful with their lives. Steve had a special appreciation of those who took up the health/medical careers — his favorite classes taught. His love of football and wrestling grew through the years as he coached with a passion of bettering oneself and excelling to the best of ones abilities. The friendships Steve made with fellow coaches as well as students carried him through life knowing he made a difference.
He is survived by his wife Bernie of George, IA; son, Michael (Joy) Weier of Algona, IA; granddaughters, Shelby Weier and Kylie Weier; grandsons, Ryan Weier, Jared Jaros (fiancé Carly), Tyler Jaros (Andrea), and Adam Jaros (Carmiri); and great grandsons Jett and Oliver.
Over the last couple of weeks, Steve mentioned multiple times how he was ready to be with Marsha, his dearly missed daughter who preceded him in death almost five years ago.
