Ruth Hocking, age 92, of Rock Rapids, Iowa died Monday, November 28, 2022, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, December 2, 2022 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, IA. Burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery at Rock Rapids, IA.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Rock Rapids Public Library.
Ruth Hendrene “Kroon” Hocking was born on April 28, 1930, on a farm near Sioux Center, Iowa, to Neal and Wilhemina Kroon. She was baptized in the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, Iowa and started elementary school at a country school near Sioux Center. The family moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Ruth began attending Rock Rapids Elementary School in the second grade. Ruth graduated from Rock Rapids Wilson High School in 1947. After graduation she worked at the Rock Rapids State Bank, then as a secretary at the elementary school in Rock Rapids. She spent the rest of her working career as an assessor in the Lyon County’s Assessor’s Office.
Ruth was married on April 8, 1954, to Milton “Bud” Hocking in the First Reformed Church of Rock Rapids. After retirement, Bud and Ruth spent several months of each winter in Texas and each summer at their cabin on Little Turtle Lake in Talmoon, Minnesota. After Bud’s death in 2007, Ruth continued to spend each summer at their lake cabin enjoying time with friends and family.
Ruth is survived by her children, Sandra Laurie of Washington, DC, and Clay Hocking (wife Shaun) of Hugo, MN, two grandsons, Ian Laurie (wife Kelly) of Arlington, VA and Tyler Laurie (wife Beth) of Glen Mills, PA, a granddaughter, Hendrene Berg of Menonmonie, WI, and seven great grandchildren: Taylor, Owen, Jaxon, Jakob, Theo, Sloane, and Penelope Ruth (Poppy).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Neal and Mina Kroon, her husband of fifty-three years, Bud Hocking, brother-in-law, Kenneth Hocking, and sister-in-law Darlene Hocking.
Ruth will be remembered for her strong faith, her love of family and friends, her love of reading and books, and time spent at her summer cabin.
