Mary Ann Bosler, daughter of Herbert and Lillian (Stoltenberg) Dehn, was born June 24, 1932, on a farm northwest of Alvord. She attended country school at Logan #7, Doon #1, Allison #2, Allison #4 and graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1950.
She was united in marriage to Henry Bosler, Jr on November 6, 1955, at Christ Lutheran Church, Alvord, the same church where she had earlier been baptized and confirmed. After their marriage they farmed for 8 years west of Alvord before moving to Alvord in 1964. She became the Alvord correspondent for the Inwood (West Lyon) Herald newspaper in 1965. She also was the correspondent for the Lyon County Reporter and the Rock Valley Bee for a number of years. In 2014 she retired after 48 years of gathering news from the Alvord area.
She was employed part-time at the Alvord Feed and Supply for a number of years. She worked on a committee to gather history for a book that was to be published in 1968 for the 75th anniversary of Alvord’s incorporation. This began her interest in family history, as well as the history of Alvord and Lyon County. Her many scrap books and notes were helpful when the 100th anniversary of Alvord was planned for 1993, and another history book was written. She served on the Lyon County Historical Board and was a docent for 9 ½ years at the museum after it was organized.
She and Henry spent many evenings polka dancing at the Arkota in Sioux Falls and the VFW in Luverne. Mary Ann also enjoyed gardening, taking pride in her flowers, entering many in the Lyon County Fair. She also spent a lot of time canning produce from her garden, especially pickles. She was a member of the Alvord Women’s Club and of Women’s Circles at Christ Lutheran Church in Alvord.
In 2011 she and Henry were honored to be selected to be the straw boss at the Granite Threshing Bee. In June 2018 she and Henry joined other long time Alvord residents to ride in the parade celebrating Alvord’s 125th anniversary. The couple moved to Rock Rapids in 2016 to make their home. Henry passed away in 2018 (Lyon Specialty Care).
Survivors are Mark (Paula) Bosler of Larchwood, Lori (Brian) Penn of Sioux Falls, and Jann (Dale) Haas of Sioux Falls, five grandchildren, Nicole Bosler, Nathan (Brooke) Penn, Jodi Penn, Kayleigh Haas, and Brenden Haas, three great grandchildren, Brecken Bosler, Lillian Penn, and Kaia Penn, three step-grandchildren, Justin Bouwman, Jami (Cory) Jensen, and Drew (Christa) Bouwman, and 7 step great grandchildren, Mitchell Bouwman, Kelsey Bouwman, Taylor Bouwman, McKenna Jensen, Easton Jensen, Owen Jensen, Keatyn Bouwman, and Colt Bouwman, sisters-in-law Lorraine Gacke and Carol (Delano) Hinsch, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
