Marlys De Bruin

Marlys M. De Bruin, age 96, of Rock Rapids formerly of Doon, IA, passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at the Avera Merrill Pioneer Hospital in Rock Rapids.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids, with the Rev. Rob Horstman officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM Monday, September 7, 2026 also at the Jurrens Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.

Marlys Maxine De Bruin was born on March 10, 1930 on a farm in rural Doon, Iowa to parents Marc and Jacoba (Van Batavia) Postma. She attended country school near Doon and for a time the family lived near Beaver Creek, MN before settling again near Doon. In 1944 she started high school in Inwood, IA. On July 4, 1946 she met the love of her life Garrit at the Rock Rapids 4th Celebration, the Tilta-Whirl sealed the deal, he asked her for a date the following week and the rest as they say was history. She was a 1948 graduate of Doon High School. The couple was united in marriage on December 29, 1948. After an education degree from Westmar College in LeMars, IA. She then taught country school in various places while continuing to gain her education degree at Northwestern College in Orange City. Her teaching career lasted 11 years. While the couple farmed and raised their family, Marlys could be found gardening, canning the produce, feeding and raising her chickens, and milking cows. For the next fifteen years her family was central to all in her life. Marlys then went to work at K Products for 27 years, and for thirteen years after that she worked at Esther Altman's Daycare and did childcare for families in their homes.

Marlys was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Church in Sioux Center, IA. She enjoyed short little vacations, especially to WA state. She also enjoyed baking, playing board games with grandchildren and any and all family gatherings. Her family and their fulfillment was her life. Blessed be the memory of Marlys Maxine De Bruin.

She is survived by her 5 children : Garry (Robin) De Bruin, Marsha (Merle) Newborg, Dean (Janine) De Bruin, Cheryl (Randy) Bos, and Kevin De Bruin. 10 grandchildren : Kim Bos, Kayla (Tom) Vander Lee, Jackie (Matt) Elbers, Melissa (Travis) Snyders, R. Kody (Jurnea) Bos, David (Karen) De Bruin, Matt (Ashley) Newborg, Karlee (Fiance, Aaron Miller) Bos, Bergin (Darin) Koch, and Madisyn Newborg (Fiance, Cole Tousignant): 12 great-grandchildren: Brielle, Baylor and Briggs Vander Lee, Jaylee and Laina Elbers, Emery, Riley and Adalyn Snyders, Eli and Ezekial DeBruin and Rhettyn and Auggie Bos.and: one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Harriet Postma.

She is preceded by husband, Garrit De Bruin, parents, and one brother; Gilbert Post and a host other relatives.
