Marie Fredricka Johnson was born January 5, 1929, in rural Doon, Iowa, the daughter of Franklin and Johanna (Schnepf) Johnson. She and her siblings grew up on an acreage west of George. Marie attended the Garfield #1 Country School through the 8th grade. Her family moved to George, and she attended George High School for 2 years. While in high school she worked in the bakery and at M & F Café.
Marie met the love of her life, Ervin Bruns, at the annual George Picnic in June of 1943. Their courtship took place during the war while Erv was enlisted in the Navy. On January 3, 1945, Marie and Erv were united in marriage during his 15-day leave. Marie moved to Key West, Florida in March of that year to join her husband. They thoroughly enjoyed their first part of their marriage in Florida. They moved to Norfolk, Virginia in October of 1945, then to Chicago, until Erv’s discharge on January 1, 1946.
The Bruns’ moved back and lived in George, Iowa, where Marie worked for George Produce grading eggs for 10 years. Their family continued to grow, and Marie started working for Campbell Soup Company in Worthington, Minnesota. In 1973, they moved to Forest City, Iowa where Marie worked in food service at the hospital and the Good Sam Center. In 1977, Marie was very proud of the fact that she received her GED the same year that Mark graduated from high school. In 1978, Erv developed some health issues, so the couple and Tim moved to California, where 2 of the boys were living. After a year of being in California, the couple moved back to Sibley, Iowa where they remained. Ervin passed away on September 5, 1991. Marie continued working at Campbell Soup and retired in 1992. In retirement, she enjoyed traveling to visit her children and grandchildren and helping her sister Nina care for her daughter Lola. She moved to Sibley Specialty Care in 2020.
Marie was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sibley, taking part in women’s circle and various activities in the church. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, reading, but most of all loved her family and the time she spent with them. She was proud of all of her childrens and grandchildren’s athletic and academic accomplishments. She will be remembered as a faithful, kind, loving, and hardworking mother.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Stan (Helen) of the Philippines, Dave (Sue) of Stafford, VA, Jeff (Deb) of Riverside, CA, Mark (Nancy) of Sibley, IA, Tim (Bobbi) of Ames, IA; 13 grandchildren Tracy, Joe, Dan, Samantha, Jack, Brittany, Kristina, Anna, Andrew, Alexis, Emma, Brandon, and Steven; 19 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Blessed Be Her Memory.
