Margaret Nell, the daughter of Jasper and Nellie (Duin) DeVries, was born in the town of George, Iowa, on July 24, 1925. Her family moved to a farm north of George when she was five. She received her elementary education in a country school. World War II was in progress when she graduated from the George High School in 1942. On completion of the secretarial program offered at the American Institute of Business, Des Moines, Iowa, she   returned home to help her father farm until her brother was discharged from the army in 1945. She enrolled in a branch school of Iowa State Teacher’s College, Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she attained a teaching certificate, after which she taught at the rural Midland #6 school.

On September 8, 1948, she was united in marriage to Clarence E. Dickmann at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hull, Iowa. To this union two sons were born. The couple became members of Immanuel Lutheran Church, George, Iowa, in May 1949. They had observed 61 years of marriage when Clarence was called to his eternal home on January 19, 2010.

Margaret, better known as “Skipper”, was inspired by her belief, perseverance, and strong work ethic; she strived to serve her church faithfully. She taught Sunday School class for many years and was actively involved in the Immanuel Lutheran Women’s activities. Humor, thankfulness, and reaching out to others was a part of her being.

She found the everyday routine of rural life very gratifying as she and Clarence farmed together southwest of George. They treasured life, family, and friends. When they experienced the special joy of becoming grandparents, they felt richly blessed.

Always, all through their marriage, they welcomed extra guests at their table, and visited to share meals with the elderly and those confined. They also enjoyed traveling. Their family summer vacations were spent at many historical places of interest throughout the United States.

“Skipper” was devoted to her family, and she also found delight in baking, reading novels, ballroom dancing, vegetable and flower gardening, and driving her tractor during seasonal work. For many years, during the wee hours of the night, she often sat behind her old typewriter composing numerous human interest stories for a variety of occasions. She was the author and director of pageant scripts for the towns of George, Boyden, and Immanuel Lutheran Church during their centennial celebrations.

Those left to share her memories are two sons and their wives, Charles and Teresa Dickmann, Brandon, SD; and Dr. Michael and Bridget Dickmann, George, IA; two grand-children, Kaitlyn Dickmann, George, IA and Jacob Dickmann, Brandon, SD; and two sisters-in-law,   Bertha DeVries, Grand Island, NE; Mildred Zenk, Sheldon, IA; and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; an infant grandson, Anthony Floyd Dickmann; grandson, C. Zachary Dickmann; brother, Jacob DeVries; sister, Florence and her husbands Herbert Feldman and Chris Boumann; and sister, Grace and her husband Wallace Arends; and her in-laws, Charles and Anna Dickmann, Alfred and Elsie   Dickmann, Ted and Frances Dickmann, Robert and Mildred Dickmann and William Zenk.
