Written by Leroy:
I, Leroy Dean Stevenson was born on October 29, 1949 in Portland, Oregon to Jack and Alyce (Wentler) Stevenson. I then moved to Sibley, Iowa when I was about 4 years old with my mother, sister, and brother.
I attended school in Sibley, graduating in 1967. While in high school I worked part time at the Sibley Gazette and Tribune for John VanderLinden, and continued working there until 1969 when I enlisted in the Army (after a draft notice.)
I then went to printing school in Belvor, Virginia. Upon that graduation, I got my orders for Okinawa assigned to the 7th Psychological Operations Group where we printed, package, and dropped propaganda leaflets over Vietnam (warfare with words.)
On February 29, 1972 (after honorably discharged) I came home and met my wife, Karen Post, for the first time. We were married on July 21, 1972. We had 3 children-Jaysen, Jodi, and Jill.
I worked for Chase Bag beginning in 1972 through May of 2010. During that time, I joined the Sibley Fire Department, serving 23 years with 12 years as Fire Chief. I began the C.E.R.T. program and later joined the Sibley Ambulance Team for 7 years. I also spent 20 years on the Iowa Draft Board.
I worked at Sheldon’s Village Northwest and then the Osceola Community Hospital’s maintenance department, and then the New Beginnings Thrift Store in downtown Sibley. When covid hit, I then retired for the 3rd and final time.
I was a 50-year member of the First Reformed Church, a lifetime member of the VFW Post No. 7373, a member of the American Legion No. 324, and served on the Sibley Board of Adjustment for 15 plus years.
I enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, camping (especially at Lake Benton’s Stoney Point), eating out with friends and family, and the love of playing pinochle! We took a number of bus trip tours, 2 cruises-one in Alaska and the other Hawaii.
I am survived by wife, Karen; son, Jaysen (significant other, Samantha South); daughters, Jodi (Mark) Lidtke, and Jill Stevenson. I also was blessed with 2 granddaughters, Kiley and Zoe Stevenson, and their mother Sara Curry. I am survived by sister, Belinda and brother, Ronald; 3 sisters-in-law, Cheryl (Dick) Henrich, Linda (George) Gross, Marlene (Gary) Martens; an aunt, Alvina Breuer; and many nieces, nephew, and cousins. Our family was also blessed by the care of a special person, Meredith Jones.
Blessed are my memories, Leroy Stevenson.
