On a Spring afternoon, April 26, 1927, Joyce Irene was born to Glenn & Bessie Goodell on a farm south of Lake Park, IA in Excelsior Twp. She joined four siblings & later became the middle child after four more siblings were born. They were a close family & had a great time on the farm where they grew up. The children often joined their Mother around the piano to sing favorite songs. They enjoyed skating on the farm pond & playing with many cousins who lived nearby. A huge garden was planted & tended by all the family. Picking raspberries & ground cherries provided their mother with fruit for many pies. Joyce enjoyed making & eating homemade pudding all her life. Her mother sewed most all their clothing, often making over older clothing or using feed sacks as fabric. She & her sisters also developed a love of sewing. They had a large extended family in the Lake Park area & it wasn’t unusual for many to gather at the Goodell farm often.

Joyce attended Excelsior school in rural Lake Park, graduating in 1945. She was very involved in school plays & music contests. Throughout the years she was often asked to sing for special occasions in the area.

On January 4, 1948 Joyce married Dayton Monier when they eloped to Jackson, MN. Dayton & Joyce first resided with his parents while Dayton & his Dad, Andrew, built a tiny house just 1 ½ miles E of Cloverdale. In 1953 they purchased a house in Cloverdale & moved there with their two small children, Dennis & Dianne. Later Jerry & Julie joined the family. They enjoyed their life in Cloverdale for many years. Feeding farm help was one of Joyce’s biggest jobs, morning lunches driven to the field, noon meals at the kitchen table & then afternoon lunches again delivered. Joyce was an expert baker & everyone loved her chocolate chip cookies. Before the last cookie was eaten another batch was mixed up. Her love of baking cookies lasted until she had a mild stroke in 2015. And even afterward she asked for help to bake some more.

Her favorite things were pink clothing, pink flowers, a book on her lap at all times, pudding & always having her family around.

Joyce also sewed much of her & her children’s clothing through the years. The sewing machine was positioned at one end of the kitchen so that she was available to “put the coffee on” when Dayton brought friends in. Many times she had just started cutting out another piece of clothing on the kitchen table when it was set aside to put another plate of cookies on the table.

Sadly, on January 3, 1985, Dayton passed away after they had been married 37 years. Joyce continued to live in Cloverdale. She got her first library card & continued to read until she passed away. After she entered the hospital she still asked that her books be brought to the hospital. She also kept busy babysitting grandchildren, making cookies, traveling with her Mother to Idaho to visit her sister, spending time with all her siblings and friends.

Joyce was a charter member of the Cloverdale Garden Club, for 50 years. She enjoyed singing with the Methodist church choir, and Ms. Musicale. A neighborhood group of women called themselves the “Merry 7” and they enjoyed many celebrations & laughs over nearly 60 years.

Joyce later reconnected with a high school friend, Chet Thorn. They built a home in Cloverdale where they enjoyed several years.

In December 2025, after living in Cloverdale for 71 years, Joyce went to live at Osceola Senior Living. She passed away on February 14, 2026 at Osceola Regional Health Center in Sibley, IA, with family by her side. A very fitting day full of love & hearts and her favorite color pink.

Her family feels blessed to have had her for so many years. She will be so missed by her children, Dennis Monier, Dianne Raveling, Jerry Monier & his wife Peggy and Julie Ackerman & her husband Kelly. Grandchildren; Jay Raveling, Jennifer (Nathan) Croatt, Heather Raveling, Brian Monier, Michael (Bridget) Raveling, Dustin (Amber) Monier, Ashley Monier (Shane), Mitchell (Angie) Ackerman, Jill (Travis) Boeke, & Allison (Dustin) Beenken and several great grandchildren. Great grandchildren; Lars, Elliott, Arie, Keaton, Liam, Emma, Landon, Isaiah, Connor, Dayton, Kallie, Oliver, Willow & Bentley. A brother Leon Goodell & his wife Gladys of Spirit Lake, IA; and sister-in-law, Betty Goodell of Spirit Lake, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dayton, son in law, Doug Raveling, brothers; Oran, Clayton, Don, Jack & sisters Olive, Betty & June. And friend, Chet Thorn.
