Ashton, Iowa
John “Jack” Martin Honkomp, age 78, of Ashton, Iowa, died on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
A Memorial Mass will be 11:00 AM, Friday, April 24th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton, IA, with Father Siby Punnoose as Celebrant.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, with family present.
John “Jack” M. Honkomp was born on March 20, 1948, in Sheldon, IA, the only child of Martin A. and Clara C. (Arning) Honkomp. He was raised on family farm near Ashton, IA, helping with the day-to-day operation of the farm. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1966, and began trucking for Halder Trucking in Cherokee, IA.
Jack was united in marriage to Mary Meester on August 23, 1969, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Sibley, IA. They were blessed with six children, Brian, Darin, Daniel, Curt, Jason and Stacey. They began living in Cherokee, while Jack drove truck until 1973, when they moved to Mary’s parents farm near Sibley. In 1978 they moved to Jack’s family farm, where they crop farmed, milked dairy cattle, and raised livestock for several years.
Jack was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Ashton, IA. He enjoyed fishing, driving his Kubota ATV and coffee time with his friends. Most of all, Jack enjoyed time with family at the farm.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Honkomp of Ashton, IA; five sons, Brian (Monica) Honkomp, Darin (Michele) Honkomp, both of Sheldon, IA, Daniel Honkomp, Curt (Kirstin) Honkomp, both of Ashton, IA and Jason (Stephanie) Honkomp of Mt. Lake, MN; one daughter, Stacey Honkomp of Ashton, IA; fourteen grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a sister-in-law, Linda (Tom) Wilson of Sioux Falls, SD; two brothers-in-law, Bob (Karen) Meester of Sioux Falls, SD and Dennis (Jean) Meester of Bigelow, MN; and several nieces, nephews and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Clara Honkomp; and his parents-in-law, Henry and Helen Meester.
