John G. Heyer, age 78 of George, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at the Avera Merrill Pioneer Hospital in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, March 31st, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in George, IA.
Memorial service will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in George, with Reverend Bryan Anderson officiating.
Arrangements are in the care of the Jurrens Funeral Home of George, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be directed to the Tabernacle Baptist Church.
John Glenn Heyer was born on June 5, 1947, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of John B. and Ruth G. (Kellogg) Heyer. He grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and Pleasant Hill, California, where he graduated from High School. After graduating, he attended Westmar College and graduated with a bachelor's degree. John then enlisted in the National Guard and served for six years.
On December 22, 1967, he was united in marriage to Ruth Vander Ploeg at the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, Iowa. John and Ruth were blessed with two adopted sons, John Wesley and Jeremy Glenn. The couple lived in several places throughout their lives together, such as Orange City, Iowa, Des Moines, Iowa, Kentucky, California, and presently in George, Iowa.
John was a teacher and taught in Annville, Kentucky, Prairie City, Iowa, West Des Moines, Iowa, and George Little Rock Schools in George, Iowa.
John was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in George, where he was a very active member. His passion for kids was evident on Wednesday nights at the AWANA program and teaching Sunday school to his class of 3rd and 4th grade boys. Always making sure they understood the plan of salvation by believing in Jesus alone! He had a special way of getting and keeping their attention. They knew that he believed and lived what he taught. John was also a member of the Jack Sauter American Legion Post No. 404 in George. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, fishing, Sudoku, and word find puzzles. He mentored many men and offered them love and advice. John, with his servant heart, was always willing to help anyone in need.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of fifty-eight years, Ruth Heyer of George, Iowa; two sons, John Wesley (wife, Alison), their children, Caetlyn, Abigail, and Wesley Heyer of Discovery Bay, California. Alison’s children from a previous marriage are Alex Birdsall and Dezirae (husband, Fabian) Carrington. Jeremy Glenn (wife, Rachel) Heyer, and their children, James, Leila, and Grace, Heyer of Chesapeake, Virginia; three siblings, Patricia (husband, Glen) Miller of San Jose, California, Donald (wife, Shelley) Heyer of Concord, California, and Michael (wife, Patricia) Heyer of Oakland, California; sister-in-law, Patricia (the late, Steven) Heyer of Spring Hill, Tennessee; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John B. and Ruth G. Heyer; daughter, Ashley Dawn Heyer in infancy; brother, Steven Heyer; father and mother-in-law, Donald and Gertrude Vander Ploeg.
