JoAnn passed away on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26th, at her home surrounded by her three children. The Jurrens Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
JoAnn (Hofmeyer) Noble was born at her grandmother’s house (Sanborn, IA) on October 25, 1924 to George and Pearl (DeRoos) Hofmeyer. She lived her youth and attended school in the Sanborn and Sibley area.
On December 1, 1944 JoAnn was united in marriage to Donald Noble in Sibley. This marriage was blessed with three children Lonnie, LeAnn and Connie. After their marriage Don and Jo helped Grandpa Noble farm and lived in a 12’ x 26’ one room tenant house on the farm. They farmed the land with a pretty pair of blue roan horses. In 1954 Grandpa Noble died suddenly so they moved out to the farm to be with Grandma Noble and handled the farming. In later years they moved SW of Ocheydan and continued their own farming operation. In 1979 they stopped farming and purchased Evie’s station on Hwy 9. They opened their new café as Don and Jo’s Station and Café and enjoyed serving customers until 1991. In their “retirement” years Don worked as Ocheyedan’s assistant maintenance man and Jo provided day care for some beloved children: Joanna and Emily Kruger, Skylar and Savanna. She was a Grandma to them.
They were active members of the Congregational Church and Methodist Church in Ocheyedan. JoAnn was very musical and played piano and sang at many church functions as well as teaching Sunday School and together they lead the church youth group for several years.
Jo was a strong, beautiful and kind soul who loved everyone. She was a hard worker – farming and running Don and Jo’s café outside Ocheyedan. Even after retiring, she was famous for her potato salad, but also a master at making pies, brownies, cookies, baby blankets and kitchen towels. She was welcoming and always laughing…she loved having fun. Throughout the years her kitchen table was always open to anyone and everyone who wanted to stop for coffee. A few years ago she was crowned the Queen of Ocheyedan.
Grandma Jo was independent, living at home and driving her cute little Jeep Liberty until very recently. She died from complications of Covid-19 due to her health related issues. She spent 2 weeks in the hospital and was able to return to her home to pass peacefully surrounded by her 3 adoring children.
Most importantly she loved the Lord and it showed. Life well-lived, good and faithful servant. Give Pappa Don and Jana a big hug for us! We love you and will miss you.!
Those to cherish her memory include her children and spouses; Lonnie (Cheryl) Noble of Spirit Lake, IA; LeAnn (Gary) DuBois of Sioux Falls, SD; Connie (Kurt) Hines of Truman, MN and foster daughter Rita (Skeeter) Johnson of Ocheyedan.
Grandchildren Dawn (Mark) Kramer, Courtney (Jeremy) Bolluyt from Spirit Lake, IA; Jesse (Krysten) Walters of Fairmont, MN. Step grandchildren Scott (Sara) DuBois of Reno, NV and Tim DuBois of Sacramento, CA. Great grandchildren Gavin Kramer and Lawton Kramer of Spirit Lake, IA, Elizabeth Bolluyt, Spirit Lake. Baby boy Walters due April 2021. Step great grand children Harlan and Tobin DuBois of Reno, NV. Sister in law Arlene Noble of Hartley, IA. Survived by many nieces and nephews, friends and cousins.
