Jean Estelle (Jamieson) Stubbe, 104, of George, IA, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2026. She was born on May 16, 1922, in Danville, VT, to Mahlon and Mantie (Adams) Jamieson. After graduating from Danville High School, she worked for Western Union in Boston, MA. While visiting her sister, Dorothy, at a military base in Palacios, TX, she met her future husband, Charley H. Stubbe (Chuck) who was stationed there as a US Army Air Corp mechanic during World War II. Following their Christmas Day wedding in 1945, they made their home in George, farmed, and raised a family of eight children – four girls and four boys. They were married for 46 years until Chuck’s death in 1992.
The 1950 census listed Jean as a “farmer helper,” but she was so much more. She devoted herself as a homemaker through cooking, baking, and canning. She especially enjoyed baking homemade bread, dinner rolls, and her beloved overnight buns, and it brought her great joy to share with them with family, friends, and those gathered around her table. She also spent countless hours knitting afghans and other handmade gifts she lovingly shared with her family. She enjoyed tending her large garden where raspberries and strawberries provided summertime treats for her children and grandchildren and colorful flowers lined the drive to her home.
Jean was a faithful member of the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George. Whether attending services in person or more recently watching the church’s television broadcast at the desk in the corner of her kitchen her faith remained a steady part of her life. From that familiar spot, she could see visitors coming up her driveway and a bulletin board filled with treasured family photographs that reminded her daily of those she loved. She was always ready to welcome guests into her warm kitchen, that was often filled with the aroma of her famous overnight buns or apple bars. Downstairs, the pantry shelves in the basement were stocked with the fruits and vegetables she canned in her own kitchen.
She worked for Summa’s Flowers gladiolas business, in all the areas that allowed her to tend to the bulbs and flowers. For nearly 25 years, she worked part-time at the George State Bank, cleaning alongside her sister-in-law. Jean retired from that part-time work at the age of 86 and remained close to her George State Bank family, always being greeted fondly whenever she’d stop by the bank for a visit.
Although home and family were always at the center of her life, Jean also enjoyed traveling. She visited places such as Hawaii, the Pacific Northwest, New York, Vermont and throughout New England, Washington, D.C., California, Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Colorado, Texas, and Mexico making cherished memories with family and friends along the way. Close to home in George, she loved going on rides through town with her daughter or in her son’s golf cart. In addition to their eight children, Jean and Chuck created a legacy of more than two dozen grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren spanning the country from coast to coast.
Those left to honor Jean’s memory are her children; Glee (Paul) Wiersma of George, IA; Jill (Gary) Schmitt of Lee’s Summit, MO; Charles (Sandy) Stubbe of Cherokee, IA; Brent (Mary) Stubbe of Raleigh, NC; Dennis of Spirit Lake, IA; son-in-law Robert Madsen, of Merritt Island, FL; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, numerous extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three of her children: Linda Spiller, Zoe Ann Madsen, and Mahlon Stubbe, and her siblings: Dorothy (Ken) Austin, of VT, Mahlon (Florence) Jamieson, of VT, and Carolyn (Alfred) Korthals, of George, IA.
Her life was a testament to faith, hard work, generous hospitality, and unwavering devotion to her family. The love she shared through her home, her hands, and her heart will continue to live on in the generations she leaves behind.
