Their family moved to Sibley, IA when Jan was young and he attended Sibley Christian School and graduated from Hull Western Christian High School. During his high school years, Jan worked at Nick & Bob’s Red Owl Grocery Store.

Jan was united in marriage to Constance “Connie” Bauerly on March 20, 1961, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sibley. They were blessed with three children, Douglas, Jeffrey and Bradley.
