Herman was born on April 9, 1920, on a farm near Little Rock, IA, the son of Herman and Mattie (Kanengieter) Voss. He attended country school and later graduated from Little Rock High School in 1939.
On March 20, 1943, Herman was united in marriage to Mabel Klingenberg. Herman then enlisted in the U.S. Army Corp on September 14, 1945, and was honorably discharged on December 16, 1945, and returned to farming with his family. He took pride in the livestock and crops and weeds were his enemy. Herman would walk a long distance to pull a sunflower he saw blooming in the corn field. He was fascinated by the machinery used in farming today and thought he was born one hundred years to soon. He continued farming after retiring by gardening in the backyard. He enjoyed loading cantaloupe in the wheelbarrow and sharing them with his neighbors.
When living near Little Rock, Herman was active in the Salem Reformed Church, serving on the consistory as deacon and elder. In 1983, Herman and his wife Mabel retired from farming and moved to Sheldon, IA. Herman and his wife Mabel enjoyed spending the winters in Texas for several years.
Herman enjoyed traveling and was always ready for a day trip, especially to the Spencer Fair or the Iowa State Fair. Antique tractors and steam engine shows with his son-in-law were a highlight of his summer.
Herman is survived by his wife of seventy-nine years, Mabel Voss of Sheldon, IA; daughter, Bonnie (Gene) Schubert of Lee’s Summit, MO; five grandchildren, Steven (Theresa) Lursen, Joan (Jason) Wiese, Tara (Chris) Haas, Jordin Lursen, and Heidi Schubert; and other extended family.
Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter, Marilynn Gayle Lursen; son-in-law, Eldon Lursen; five brother, Albert, Donald, John, Earl, and Harry and their wives.
