Gordon C. Shaffer age 98 of George, IA died Friday, December 31, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society in George, IA.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at the Jurrens Funeral Home in George, IA with Pastor Jeremy Winter, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery at George, IA.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 4th from 9:00 a.m. until time of service with the family present at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George.
Gordon Chester Shaffer was born September 4, 1923, to Marie (Fiihr) and Chester Shaffer on a farm near Boyden Iowa. He attended country school and later graduated from Boyden High School. Later he joined the Navy and after a brief enlistment he was discharged. On January 4, 1946, he was united in marriage with Ida Geerdes at the Ebenezer parsonage in George. To this union five children were born, Douglas, Dwight, Deanna, Danny and Denise. Gordon spent his life farming alongside his wife, raising livestock, milking cows and farming the land. They lived near Boyden during the early years of their marriage and later moved to the farm where Ida was raised and continued with their farming operation. Gordon was also a gifted musician and played for the Lutheran Church in George for many years as well as playing with the Georgie Boomgaarden dance band for many years, playing the organ. He was still able to play for the residents at the Good Samaritan Center after he became a resident. In his later years he had a love of gardening, raising flowers and feeding and watching the birds outside his kitchen window and managing to go fishing once in a while. Molly his beloved rat terrier dog was his soul mate during the last years he spent on the farm. Gordon passed away at the Good Sam Center in George on December 31,2021 at the age of ninety-eight.
He is survived by five children, Douglas and wife Janet of George, Dwight and his wife Gladys of George, Deanna Pederson of George, Danny Shaffer of Sheldon and Denise Shaffer of Rushmore, MN. Nine Grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and six step great grandchildren.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents Chester and Marie, great grandson, Henry Shaffer, brother Leroy and sisters Vergamae and Rose.
