Freda Dekkenga, age 94 of Ocheyedan, Iowa passed away Sunday, July 12, 2026 at Osceola Senior Living in Sibley, Iowa.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, July 17, 2026 at Ocheyedan Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Phil Westra, officiating. Burial will take place prior to the service at Ocheyedan Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, July 16th at Ocheyedan Christian Reformed Church.
Freda Dekkenga, daughter of Louis and Della (Koonstra) Bosma, was born October 21, 1931 southwest of Sibley IA. On July 12, 2026, she passed away peacefully at the age of 94 at the Osceola Senior Living.
Freda grew up in the rural Sibley and Ocheyedan area alongside her five older brothers and one younger brother, attending local country schools.
On April 30, 1953, she married Louis Dekkenga of Matlock, IA at the Ocheyedan Christian Reformed Church, where she remained a faithful member throughout her life. Together, they raised three children: James, Debra, and Douglas and shared many years of farming and family life.
Freda loved tending her flower and vegetable gardens, mowing the yard, helping on the farm, working puzzles, crocheting, volunteering with the Christian School's Trash for Cash program, participating in the Sew n Sew group, and serving in the American Legion Auxiliary. In her later years, she greatly enjoyed visits from family and friends.
Left to cherish her memories are her children: Jim Dekkenga of Ocheyedan, IA; Deb (Mark) Harberts of Albuquerque, NM; Doug (Lisa) Dekkenga of Spirit Lake, IA; grandchildren: Jennifer (Jeff) Goodman of Ashland, NE; Chanda (Drew) Buchholz of Sibley, IA; Brad (Anne) Harberts of Albuquerque, NM; Dan (Katrina) Harberts of Flagstaff, AZ; Justin (Susan) Dekkenga of Pittsburgh, PA; and Lindsey Dekkenga of Lake Park, IA; 11 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Joyce Bosma of Shawano, WI; brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Shirley Dekkenga of Burnsville, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; her parents; her brothers and sisters-in-law Harry and Estella Bosma, William and Esther Bosma, Clarence and Frances Bosma, Andrew and Lucy (Dekkenga)Bosma, Charles Bosma, and Henry Bosma; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Case and Evelyn Dekkenga; Willis and Sebena Dekkenga; Herman and Thelma Dekkenga; Angelena and George Baker; Martin and Leona Dekkenga; and Anna and Marvin Bomgaars.
Freda will be remembered for her steadfast faith, and deep love for her family.
