Florence “Flossie” Van Roekel, age 99 of George, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held for Clinton and Florence Van Roekel at 1:00 PM, Saturday, May 30th at Hope Reformed Church, rural George, IA. There will be a time of fellowship following the memorial service.
Florence Helena (Flossie) Van Roekel was born January 10, 1927, to Albert and Helena (Van Tilburg) Scheffer at their home in Carmel, Iowa. Her father was the proprietor of a general merchandise store in that small village, so she and her siblings grew up learning and working in the business. After rural schooling she graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1944, with a Normal Training Certificate enabling her to teach rural school. She taught at Plato #5, two miles from Carmel until her marriage.
On August 21, 1947, she married Clinton Van Roekel, son of John G. & Sarah Van Roekel, In the Carmel Reformed Church. In March 1948 they moved to Lyon County onto a farm on the south edge of Geoge, Iowa. There, their four sons were born and raised. They all were members of Hope Reformed Church, where Flossie was very involved with music, teaching, and women's work; holding various offices in the church and Woman's Classical and Synodical levels of the RCA. She also participated and enjoyed serving in different community groups. Her love of music spread over many years; from an early age she used her vocal talent as well as piano on many occasions. She also was an organist and choir director at Hope Reformed Church
In June 1980 they moved to the north edge of George until in March of 2020 they moved to Fieldcrest Senior Living in Sheldon, la. On Sept. 8, 2021, Clint died at 99 after 74 years of marriage. She entered Sanford Sheldon Care Center in September of 2023 and was there till she passed away.
She is survived by her four sons: David & Arla, George, IA, Dennis DVM, Baldwin, WI; Paul & Shirlea, George, IA; Phil & Laura, Ankeny, IA. Two granddaughters and families: Danielle (Jeff) Hrdlicka, Kylie (Zach) Morris- Aceston, Landrick & Brexley; Sawyer (Sara) Hrdlicka-Liam: Alisson (Isaac) Meyer-Mila & Elias: Eight grandsons: Aaron (Beth)- Kade, Conner & Cael: Kollin: Clint J. (Laura)-Grace, Jonathan & Anna Joy: Kyle: Caleb (Casey)-Sylvia & Vivian: Matthew: Benjamin (Liz)-Tommy &, Jacob (Emily)- Harper & Hazel. One Sister-in-law: Alvina Van Roekel
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, Albert and Helena Scheffer, and her siblings: Cornelius (Margaret) Scheffer, Emma (Esten) Brown, and Magdalena (Arie) Schimmel; her husband's parents John and Sarah Van Roekel and his siblings: Gershom (Edna), Warren (Lillian), Merle (Joanne), Rev. James (Erma Jean), Arlin: great granddaughter, Mckenzie Beth Van Roekel (Born sleeping-12/3/2009).
Clinton Christian Van Roekel was born May 21, 1922 to John G and Sarah (Te Grotenhuis) Van Roekel at their home four miles north of Sioux Center, Iowa. He was raised on the farm. His education was in rural school and Sioux Center High School, graduating in 1940, after which he continued working on the farm with his parents.
On August 21, 1947 he married Florence (Flossie) Scheffer in the Carmel Reformed Church. In March 1948 they moved to a farm on the south edge of George, Iowa in Lyon county. It was here they raised four sons, who all were involved in the dairy and diversified farming. Clinton continued this occupation to which he was dedicated and thoroughly enjoyed. He was a faithful member of the Hope Reformed Church where he served as deacon, elder and in other activities over the years. In the 1980’s he served a term as a Lyon County Supervisor. In June 1980 they moved into their new home on the north edge of George. In March of 2020, they moved to Field Crest Senior Living in Sheldon, Iowa.
Clinton is survived by his wife of 74 years, Florence; his four sons, David (Arla) of George, IA, Dennis DVM. of Baldwin, WI, Paul (Shirlea) of George, Philip (Laura) of Ankeny, IA; also surviving are two granddaughters: Danielle (Jeff) Hrdlicka and Alisson(Isaac) Meyer; eight grandsons: Aaron (Beth), Kollin, Clint J (Laura), Kyle (Kim), Caleb (Casey), Matthew, Benjamin (Elizabeth) and Jacob (Emily) Van Roekel; 11 great grandchildren: Kylie (Zach) Morris, Sawyer (Sara) Hrdlicka, Kade, Conner, Cael, Grace, Jonathan, Anna Joy, Sylvia, Vivian, and Harper Van Roekel; 2 great great grandsons, twins, Aceston and Landrick of Kylie and Zach Morris; one brother, Arlin (Alvina) Van Roekel; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Sarah Van Roekel and brothers: Gershom (Edna), Warren (Lillian), Merle (Jo Ann) and Reverend James (Erma Jean); great granddaughter, Makenzie Beth Van Roekel (Born sleeping- 12.3.2009); his wife’s parents, Albert and Helena Scheffer and her siblings: Cornelius (Margaret) Scheffer, Emma (Esten) Brown, and Magdalena (Arie) Schimmel.
