Edward John Dagel was born May 28, 1932, the son of Alonzo and Irene (Pulscher) Dagel. The doctor who was supposed to deliver did not arrive on time, so his sister Pearl, who was 15 at the time delivered her youngest sibling Edward into the world. He grew up on a farm near Cloverdale, Iowa with his two sisters and one brother. He attended country school through the 8th grade where his sister Pearl was his teacher. Ed attended Sibley High School where he was involved in FFA, track, and Glee Club. He even had a Grand Champion boar at the 1949 and 1950 Clay County Fair. He graduated in 1952. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. The Korean War ended one month after he completed bootcamp. He served onboard the USS Midway and the battleship Iowa. He was honorably discharged in 1956.
Edward met Betty Jeanette Harris while he was stationed at the Naval base in Florida. They were united in marriage on August 10, 1956 in Macon, Georgia by Betty’s brother, who was a southern Baptist minister. Shortly after their marriage they moved to a farm near Sibley, Iowa. Edward attended Farmer’s Night School in Sheldon. He was a farmer until his retirement in 1997.
Edward enjoyed fishing, collecting tobacco tins, family history, and Sibley history. His family remembers him as a walking encyclopedia when it comes to history. There are many family members who will remember going to get a burger with him and sitting by the lake and with very little persuasion convinced him to get ice cream afterwards. It was very hard for him to say no to his grandkids and donuts were easily obtained just by asking Grandpa.
Edward’s family remember him as a true family man. He greatly enjoyed attending family events and making his grandkids laugh. He enjoyed the simple things in life and loved telling stories of days gone by about farming, old friends, family, and his time in the Navy. He also had a deep faith in God and a constant steadiness about him.
Those left to cherish his memory are his four sons: Gerald (Elizabeth) of St. Paul, Minnesota, Stephen (Kate) of Sibley, Iowa, Robert of Sibley, Iowa, and Tim (Tricia) of Sheldon, Iowa. 10 grandchildren; Monica (Cory) Murray, Stephanie (Sean) Wolf, Mackenzie, Jed, Leonard (Danyel), Jessica, Jacob, Kaitlin (Chris) Pettus, Bradi, and Noah; 12 Great-Grandchildren, and 2 Great-Great-Grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty in 2023; 2 sisters in infancy; 1 brother; 2 sisters; and 1 infant grandson Jesse Dagel.
Blessed be his memory.
