Douglas Carlton Frank was born March 10, 1940, in Pierce County, River Falls, Wisconsin, one of the twelve children of William (Bill) and Avis (Pearson) Frank. He also lived in New Richmond, Wisconsin for a short time, before moving to Anoka, Minnesota. Doug attended school through the 8th grade and obtained his GED. He was fifteen years old when he met Lucy at Bill’s Roller Rink that they frequented in Osseo, Minnesota. They were both very good at roller skating and dancing.
Douglas joined the United States Air Force in September of 1959, at Craigs Air Force base in Selma, Alabama, where he was a firefighter, crash rescue, and sheet metal worker. He received the Good Conduct medal in 1961 and was honorably discharged.
Doug and Lucy were united in marriage in August of 1963, in Anoka, Minnesota. To this union two daughters were born, Lynne (1967) and Laura (1969). The family made their home in Lake George, Minnesota and their kids attended school in St. Francis. Douglas worked at Federal Cartridge in Anoka and Midwest Printing in Minneapolis, while Lucy worked as a beautician, and Medtronics in Minneapolis. In 1978, they moved as a family to start a business. They owned and operated a very successful, A&W Family Restaurant in Sibley, Iowa for eighteen years. They sold the restaurant and tried to retire, but found A&W in Emmetsburg, Iowa and purchased and operated for another eight years. After retiring in 2006, they returned to Sibley. Doug’s wife of 52 years had a battle with lung cancer and passed away in January of 2016.
Douglas frequented the VFW post 7373 in Sibley, loved his family, friends, and church.
After a battle with dementia, at the age of 85, Douglas passed peacefully at home with his daughter and caregiver, Lynne; along with his favorite caregiver, Kim (a Godsend to them both) on May 22, 2025. He will be missed greatly by so many. If you’ve ever seen him smile, it was beautiful!
