Darrell Ver Steeg age 76 of Little Rock, IA died on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at the Sibley Specialty Care in Sibley, IA.
Visitation will be Monday, June 24th with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Little Rock, IA.
The memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church in Little Rock, IA, with Reverend Steve Anderson officiating.
Burial will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery of Little Rock, with military honors by the Buss-Johnson American Legion Post No. 316 of Little Rock.
Darrell Henry Ver Steeg was born November 20, 1947, in Sibley, Iowa, the son of Harvey J and Mabel (Janssen) Ver Steeg. Darrell was the third of five children. He attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Sibley High School in 1965.
Darrell enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1966. He was stationed at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernadino, California during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on October 30, 1970.
On June 27, 1970, Darrell was united in marriage to KathyAnn Wilcox of Altoona, Wisconsin. They moved to Little Rock and Darrell worked his own feed grinder before working for Plum Elevator in Little Rock until 1978. Along with his brother Merlin, they purchased the Corner DX in Little Rock until he sold his share to Merlin in 1989. Darrell then became a full-time rural mail carrier in Remsen, Iowa. Darrell and Merlin were instrumental in getting the LLC grocery store in Little Rock in 2003, where Darrell was the president until 2024.
Darrell was very active in many community events in the town of Little Rock. He was the mayor from 1990 to 1994, Secretary of the Town and Country for over 30 years, and was an American Legion member 48 years, holding different positions during that time. Darrell retired from the United States Postal Service in 2016, with a total of 47 years of government employment. He continued to be active in the community after his retirement.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost fifty-four years, KathyAnn Ver Steeg of Little Rock, IA; three sons, Edward Ver Steeg (special friend, Kristi Franker) of Spencer, IA, Gregory (Julie) Ver Steeg of George, IA, and David (Megan) Ver Steeg of Sioux Falls, SD; son-in-law, Jon (Tonna) Jacobson of Brandon, SD; fifteen grandchildren; four siblings, Marcella (Ron) Ling of Sheldon, IA, Donna (Eldon) Henrichs of Sibley, IA, Merlin (Kris) Ver Steeg of Little Rock, IA, and Lyle (Liz) Ver Steeg of Sibley, IA; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Mabel Ver Steeg, and daughter, Darla Jacobson.
