Daniel Ray Hibma (75) of Harris, Iowa, lived by the steady promises of farm, family and faith.
Born to Pierce and Charlotte Hibma on February 20, 1950 in Sibley, Iowa, he was raised in a large family where responsibility arrived early. Work began before the sun. Supper meant everyone at the table. If something broke, you fixed it. If someone needed help, you went. Those lessons never left him.
Dan attended and graduated in the newly consolidated Harris-Lake Park school district. Bonnie Houtsma was a neighbor a few miles down the road, and their romance began with a lunch delivered while swathing hay. Dan married Bonnie on August 10, 1971 in Ocheyedan, Iowa, and together they built a life measured in seasons. He served in the United States Army Reserve and they raised three children, Christopher, Chad and Danielle.
In 1981, a tornado tore through their farm near Harris. Buildings were damaged and the landscape changed in the early morning hours. Then neighbors and church family arrived. Fences were lifted back into place. Debris was cleared, a new house was built and life resumed.
He and Bonnie spent many years rooted in church communities. A biblical faith in Jesus shaped how he moved through the world. Quietly. Without spectacle. He believed the measure of belief was obedience. Dan was not a man who chased attention. He preferred quietly serving. He listened carefully. He spoke when he had something worth saying. If a neighbor found themselves in trouble, he was already on the way.
Becoming a grandfather brought a particular joy. Ball games, concerts and ordinary afternoons spoiling them became the treasures of later life. He watched the next generation carry forward the values he and Bonnie had tried to give them.
Dan is preceded in death by his father Pierce Hibma, his mother Charlotte Hibma and his siblings, Robert (Bob), Barb Peters and Paul Hibma. He is survived by his wife Bonnie; his son Christopher (Harrison Thompson) and daughter Genhi of Brooklyn, New York; his son Chad and his children Carter, Addison, Chase and Avery of Harris, Iowa; and his daughter Danielle (Vandenn Krouch) and children Carson, Kalli and Marcus of Chiang Mai, Thailand, along with his siblings, Lois Hasselblad, Miriam (Mim) Ernst, Joe Hibma, Judy Dykstra, Jerry Hibma, Steve Hibma and a wide circle of neighbors and friends.
He was greatly loved, but we do not grieve as those without hope. His faith in Jesus was the surest foundation of his life.
