Bonnie Ann Smith

Bonnie Smith age 92 of George, Iowa died on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at the Good Samaritan Society in George.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 13th, with family present at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2025, at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George, with Pastor Ken Eberline officiating.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George.

Bonnie Ann Smith was born on October 30, 1932, in Magnolia, MN, the daughter of Enno and Ella (Jansen) Stubbe. She grew up in Magnolia and in the 4th grade her family moved to George. Bonnie attended Country School and graduated from George High School in 1950, as Valedictorian. She attended Westmar College in Le Mars, IA, getting her teaching degree, and then taught Country School at Grant #3 and Liberal #6.

On May 27, 1952, Bonnie was united in marriage to Ronald Smith at the Hope Reformed Church, rural George, IA. They were married for 72½ years until Ronald passed away on November 20, 2024. They resided in George their entire married life, and moved to the George Good Samaritan Center on May 16, 2022. In 1958, Bonnie began substitute teaching in the George Schools, and helped with bookwork for the Standard Oil business they had purchased in 1957, which later became Smith Oil. In 2003, they retired and sold the business. Bonnie taught at Boyden Hull Schools for the 1966-1967 school year. She also enjoyed giving piano lessons for many years.

Bonnie was an active member of the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George, where she served as a member of the Mariners Club, Sunday School teacher, Junior Choir Director, Bell Choir Director, Chancel Choir Director (especially enjoyed the Christmas Eve Candlelight services), Circle Leader, Elder, and PW President. She was active at the Presbytery level for PW and counselled at Bible and WAM Camp at the Presbyterian Camp on Lake Okoboji. Bonnie was a member of the Facts and Fun Club and Otter Valley Country Club. Her hobbies included sewing, bowling, golfing, tending to her flowers, and attending many ball games. She followed the Iowa Hawkeyes, St. Louis Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys. Bonnie and Ronald enjoyed taking family vacations, travelling to visit their children, and multiple vacations with her brother Harlyn and Marlene. Bonnie enjoyed singing with Ronald and Mary. She co-organized many 4th of July parades, and was also known for her delicious potato salad.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Mary (Wesley) Rowden of Sioux City, IA, Ruth Smith of George, IA, and Randy (Lenda) Smith of Monkey Island, OK; two granddaughters, Kathryn Rowden (fiance’, Matt Wilmes) of Sioux City, IA, and Erica Smith of Hutto, TX; one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Rowden-Harstad of Sioux City, IA; one sister, Elvie Smith of George, IA; four sisters-in-law, Marlene Stubbe of George, IA, Joyce (Stephen) Hartley of Little Canada, MN, Audrey (Norman) Grooters of Vancouver, WA, and Carol (Judson) Schrick of Decorah, IA, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Enno and Ella Stubbe; husband, Ronald Smith; son-in-law, Robert “Bob” Newton, Jr.; two brothers, Harlyn Stubbe and Roger Stubbe; in-laws, Roger (Marilyn) Smith, Muriel (Kenneth) Grooters, Norman (Janice) Smith, Jerry Smith, Eleanor Smith in infancy, and Charles Smith; a niece, Laura Stubbe, and two nephews, Michael Smith and Curtis Smith.
