Alvin Jurrens, age 92, of Sibley, IA passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
The funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, December 14th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sibley, IA, with Rev. Tim Nappe officiating. Burial will follow at Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley.
The visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sibley.
Alvin was born April 12, 1931, at the family farm west of George, Iowa. He was the second son of Claus and Anke (Henrichs) Jurrens. He attended Independent #4 and graduated from the 8th grade. At the age of 14, his father passed away and Alvin along with his older brother Ubbe, spent the next 6 years helping his mother on the farm and caring for his siblings.
Alvin was inducted into the U.S. Army on August 13, 1952, and proudly served his country in Korea until his honorable discharge on May 12, 1954. He returned to the family farm and continued to help with the family farm and also work as a hired hand near Little Rock, IA.
Alvin was united in marriage to Marlys Mae Wills on July 8, 1955, in Sibley. They lived in several places throughout their marriage, such as Rushmore, MN, Adrian, MN, Denver, CO, before moving to Sibley.
Alvin worked for the U.S.D.A. as a field measurer for commodities. He then began farming near Little Rock, IA for several years. Later, they moved to Denver, CO and he worked for the Denver Mud Jacks for nearly 10 years. He then became a real estate agent and retired after 20 years in the profession. They then moved back to Sibley, IA. On April 16, 2018, Alvin’s wife, Marlys died unexpectedly. Alvin continued living in Sibley for the remainder of his life.
Alvin was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sibley and the George E. Mudge American Legion Post No. 324 of Sibley.
Alvin is survived by six siblings, Jake Jurrens of Sibley, IA, Clarence (Joyce) Jurrens of Fulda, MN, Harold (Faye) Jurrens of Lake Wilson, MN, Annetta (Dave) Hickman of Algona, IA, Fredrick Jurrens and Marvin Jurrens, both of Little Rock, IA; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Jurrens of Pipestone, MN and Darlene Jurrens of Le Mars, IA; several nieces, nephews and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claus and Anke Jurrens; parents-in-law, Logan and Winnie Wills; wife of 62 years, Marlys Mae Jurrens; two brothers, Ubbe and Glen Jurrens; two sisters-in-law, Ruth and Mavis Jurrens; a nephew, Scott Jurrens; and an infant niece, Scherie Jurrens.
