Alice Irene Feikema was born June 19, 1931, to Albert and Christine (Wassenaar) Jongerius. The oldest of four, she grew up in and around Lester. She liked being the older sister and she set the pace for her three brothers. She attended Lester school all her years of school, and was on a state qualifying basketball team during her high school years.
On September 8, 1948, she married William Feikema at the family farm, a marriage that lasted 68 years – with six kids from this union. Alice was a focused farm wife, helping with all aspects of the farm, as well as she spent a short time as a nurse’s assistant, Lyon and O’Brien County Weight Watcher lecturer, a travel agent and lastly, as the county Home Health secretary. In early years, both Alice and Bill enjoyed attending dances in Luverne Minnesota, playing Rook and Pinnacle with card groups, and annual fishing trips to Minnesota. She was a long-time member of First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, a circle leader, and she assisted with teaching many things including Sunday School, catechism and VBS.
She retired from her office job, but always stayed busy with farming, gardening, cooking, canning, 4-wheeling, weather predicting, crocheting and following baseball – specifically the Twins. She also had a passion for writing, and even pursued classes on writing throughout her life. She was a great cook and host, and she opened her house and life to all in need. She always made sure there was room at the table for anyone who stopped by the farm.
Alice is survived by 4 children, Jean (Jim) Klinkenborg, Sibley Iowa, Lois Block, Little Rock Iowa, Wayne (Judy) Feikema, Rock Rapids Iowa, and Darin (Lori) Feikema, Norwalk Iowa. 13 grandchildren, Paul, Jacalyn, Jenifer, Brenna, Matt, BJ, Chris, Brian, Heather, Jami, Jodi, Nicole and Rachel, and 22 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren. She is survived by two brothers, Glen (Shirley) Jongerius of Sheldon Iowa and Lloyd (Sharon) Jongerius of Coloma Wisconsin and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Overman of Hull Iowa, as well as tons of nieces and nephews and other extended family and friends.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill, son Jon Eric, daughter Karen, sons-in-law Chuck Lancaster and Craig Block and brother Don and sister-in-law Lee.
