Alan “Tank” Dale Wassenaar, age 76, of Doon, IA, passed away on August 25, 2026, in Rock Rapids, IA, after a lengthy struggle with cancer.

Services are pending with the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids, IA.

Alan Dale Wassenaar was born on July 22, 1950, to Donald & Alyda (Kraayenbrink) Wassenaar in Orange City, IA. Al grew up in Sheldon, IA, the oldest of 6 kids.

On February 14, 1976, he was united in marriage to Nancy Wassenaar in Ashton, IA. Al & Nancy made their home on an acreage near Doon, IA, where they raised their 5 girls.

Al worked millwright construction for 46 years as a superintendent and project manager, as well as being a crane operator. During his construction career, Al traveled to many states throughout the US & countries including Ukraine, Kazakhstan & Mexico.

In his free time, Al loved wrenching on Harleys & old cars. He was a devoted husband & father, but his greatest joy was his grandkids.

Those left to cherish his memory include Nancy, his wife of 50+ years, and his children Elisha (Sam) Palmer of Alvord, IA; Erica (Cory) Doyle of Ireton, IA; Krista Wassenaar (Gary Pech) of Sioux Falls, SD; Briana (Josh) Harrell of Sheldon, IA; Miranda (Brice) Meendering of Sheldon, IA.

His grandkids include Hunter, Mitchel, Aryanna, Crescentia, Alivia, Magdalena, William, Kane, Carrigan and Charlotte; and step-grandsons Riley & Khason

His siblings and in-laws Diane (Dick) Burns, Barb (Glen) Vanden Hull, Shelia (Mike) Weier and Marcia Wassenaar, Dave (Carol) Honkomp, Bill Honkomp, Tom (Charlene) Honkomp, Jan (Steve) Kruger, Charlotte Honkomp, Linda Honkomp, Gerald Block, as well as many extended family and friends.

Preceded in death by his parents, Donald & Alyda (Kraayenbrink) Wassenaar; brother Daryl Wassenaar, brother Veryl and Becky Wassenaar. His in-laws Edward & Grace Honkomp, Honkomp, Richard and Judith Honkomp, Jerald Honkomp, Mary Jo Block, Daniel Honkomp and Connie Honkomp.
