Loren Dale Janssen was born March 19, 1921 in Sibley, IA to Harry and Tena (Bruns) Janssen. He was raised in the Sibley area and attended Country School through the 8th grade. He grew up working on the family farm as well as being hired on other farms. Loren served in the United States Navy (1942- 1945) and was on several ships home ported out of Brooklyn, NY. He served aboard ship as a Boatswains Mate 2nd class. He saw service in the Asiatic Pacific, European, African and Middle Eastern theatres of war.
On October 20, 1946 he was united in marriage to Cecelia Kennedy at St. Anselm’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn, NY. For two years the couple made their home in Brooklyn before moving to Sibley. Loren, a hard worker, had a variety of jobs before he and his wife started their own businesses in the early 1950’s. They operated Janssen Salvage and Janssen Tree Service for over 50 years.
Loren loved the outdoors. His wife and children shared that enjoyment as they would go camping, boating, fishing and traveling together. After their children were grown, Loren and Cecelia continued their adventures, traveling the United States, visiting friends and family. After Cecelia passed away, Loren continued to travel. While at home, he enjoyed family gatherings, watching old western movies and friends stopping by for coffee. He was also a member of the American Legion. Loren had a great appreciation for nature. He especially loved animals and watching wildlife in their habitat. He could often be seen driving around in his golf cart with his canine friend seated right beside him. Loren was always ready to help, whether it was family, friend or stranger. He will be greatly missed. Blessed be his memory.
